1.
Can you give us an example of a typical Lifestyle show?
In my opinion there’s no such thing. Lifestyle encompasses so many different areas – the topics range from food, cooking and nutrition to gardening, home, design and DIY, from fashion and beauty to family issues, education and health. For every one of these topics there is an outstanding example: from cooking shows with Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsay to the Antiques Roadshow and Grow Your Own Drugs, then Undercover Boss, Supernanny, The Secret Millionaire and The Hotel Inspector. Lifestyle shows offer everything we need for a happy life – inspiration, information and always entertainment.

2.
Is there a Lifestyle show you would have loved to have created yourself?
Probably a cooking show, no specific favourite. With a singing or dancing show for instance the viewer can easily get an idea of why a candidate is strong or not, who develops the best skils etc. But with a cooking show it’s a much more interesting challenge – how do you convey to the audience how good something tastes? Taste and Smell-o-vision hasn’t been invented yet! Ideally the viewer will at some point cook for themselves what they are seeing on the TV – so it’s a perfect form of interactive television.

3. What is the future for Lifestyle programming?
Again, due to the vast range of Lifestyle programmin there is no one answer to this question. On the one hand there is a continuing trend towards large, high-quality projects that are internationally marketable whether as a format or distribution license. On the other hand there is increasing demand for simple, super-cheap formats focused on a special-interest topic, often designed to appeal to a very specific target group.

4. Do you see emerging markets or sub-genres?

The host is often the decisive factor in the success of a show. Whether it’s a world-famous celebrity chef or the local junior cooking star depends on the market and the medium. Also, the wealth of topics and formats makes Lifestyle programming ideally suited for cross-platform projects, from classic TV shows in HD and Video On Demand to online and social media platforms – anything is possible.

5.
Which show would you currently not miss for the world?
Our new cooking show Off To The Kitchen – brand new to Schweizer Fernsehen.
